John and Shirley Schritt have been great supporters of the band from the start, and I wanted to recognize their support in a more personal fashion. Besides being an engineer, John is also a musician, and is best known for his involvement in the project "Ellias, Schritt and Bell". I thought the gift I could best give would be to write a song that John could sing with me... so I sat down at a piano and began to write. But what kind of duet could I write that would be intimate and inclusive, but not a common love song? (Not that love is ever common!) This led me to think about the many sadnesses and forms of grieving that there are in the world for which there is no description. People suffer and have no words for their suffering... perhaps as in for a child that is not conceived, or a relationship that never occured... such things... This song came about in that manner. I played the chords for John and said: "You sing here." He did his part in one take. my hands are empty the house is still I haven't moved all morning sometimes it feels like I never will I must have walked this way a hundred times or more I know every crack in this ceiling and I know every inch of this floor... I used to feel better, but I can't remember when... I used to have the answers, but I was a different man then... what can you do, what can you say? You stumble in and you turn away no one to blame, no tears because there is no name for the one that never was... I... I don't know why.. why are we never told about the things we can never hold? All the plans I've made pale in the morning light and even this hopeful heart can't seem to make it right Give me a month of rainy days .......I'd walk a hundred miles more..... Bury me in a cold and cloudy haze .......If it could only make up for.... the one what can you do, what can you say?
