Inside the Dreaming

in a little while we just might see the end is near
but it will be too close to recognize
while we keep looking for that light to re-appear
it will be lost inside the shadow of our eyes
it will be lost inside the lies

take a step outside the life you think you know
take a look beyond your heartbeat
take a walk without the breath you think you own
and you might feel inside the dreaming
you might feel inside the dream

in still water the reflection is so clear
but just one motion sends it realing
just one look beyond the self you hold so dear
you just might see the pain you're feeling
you just might know what time's been stealing

take a little time to give your life a second glance
take a look past what you're seeing
release the fist, give yourself a second chance
and you might feel inside the dreaming
you might feel inside the dream

By Our Own Fear

I left and I left it all behind
I left you
I know that I never really really let you go
but oh, I've been trying

back then we could not have understood
the way love worked
then we had only our two hearts
to judge our love by
and oh, how we judged it then

as we struck out into foreign places
tried ourselves against the masses
judged our lives by others' glances
and by our own fear

since then I've been looking long and hard
to find the answers
to the questions we could never
dare to ask then
how I wish we had asked them

as we struck out into foreign places
tried ourselves against the masses
judged our lives by others' glances
and by our own fear

by our own fear
we were walking down a path of darkness
by our own fear
we abandoned those we loved
by our own fear
we left the road that led to freedom
by our own fear...

I left and I left it all behind
I left my heart there
and I'll never get it back until I face you
and the love we left behind
we left our hearts there
and we'll never get them back

until we strike out into foreign places
try ourselves against the masses
don't judge our lives by others' glances
or by our own fear

I left and I left it all behind
I left my heart there
and I'll never get it back
until I face you...

3000 Million

standing in the playground, you typical young boys
arguing over who has the most toys
one to the other with a gleam in his eye
well I've got so many you can't count that high

I've got 3000 million twenty four hundred ten
I've got 3000 million twenty four hundred ten
and there are 14 more where that came from
I've got more where that came from

sooner or later these boys become men
they play those boys games all over again
one's got his soldiers ready to die
and so many bombs you can't count that high

they've got 3000 million twenty four hundred ten
and if you think you can beat that, well you better think again
they've got millions more where that came from
they've got more where that came from

I'm shivering in the darkness on a February night
counting on the stars above to send me some light
how many are there holding up the sky
well there are so many I can't count that high

there are 3000 million twenty four hundred ten
there are 3000 million twenty four hundred ten
but there's only one world where we come from
one world where we come from

One Hip Shaking

first there was the ring of empty silence
and I quivered like a nerve lay naked
til you found me and you said
"there's something that I can do
with a shape such as yours
I can make you or break you"
and I believed you
I believed you loved me
and I let you twist me in your hands
until I bled into a shape that pleased you
what's the matter?
don't I please you anymore?

one man's whiskey is another man's tea
and I'm not certain if that wisdom applies to me
I've been learning about life, watching my TV
and you should see all the notes I'm taking

I used to love you
maybe I still do
but it's hard to play the game
when you don't know the rules
I sing your praises
feel like a fool
I make the sound of
one hip shaking

I remember your fingers
I remember your touch
I remember wanting you
too much
I remember your face
as you were leaving
you left me lonely
like one hip shaking

one man's whiskey, another man's tea
all this wisdom confusing me
I been learning about life
watching my TV
it makes the sound of
one hip shaking

No Simple Explanations

I can offer you no simple explanations
and I've given every answer that I know
it's that kind of complicated situation
where the truth is not enough to make us whole

there's a distance that can grow inside the darkness
there's a darkness that can grow inside our souls
as we move from so much love to so much heartlessness
and we come to live in fear of what we know

but I did not want to hurt you, I did not want to say
that I could no longer love you that way
with my heart and sould in tow, I told you I must go
then I left you there

there's a method to the madness you've been watching
as you analyze each step I take away
there's a knowledge that runs deep beneath the talking
and her waters will flow clear and cool one day

as we feel the anger shift and change its meaning
we can feel the pain come clean and slip away
we can see the mark of guilt is slowly fading
may we look into each other's eyes one day

'cause I did not want to hurt you, I did not want to say
that I could no longer love you that way
and with your heart and soul in tow, you had to let me go
and I left you there

I can offer you no simple explanations
and I've given every answer I can see
it's that kind of complicated situation
where the truth is not enough to set us free

Farewell to Clayoquot Sound

on Vancouver Island, a forest so old
the last of her kind she is mighty and bold
but the big blades now are mowing her down
farewell, farewell to Clayoquot Sound

well the NDP had made a big noise
trying to play the big games with all the big boys
so they sold out her soul for hardly a cent
the raw timber's cut and elsewhere is sent

blow the bridge down, blow the bridge down
in the dead of the night sink it into the ground
for the sake of the soul of Clayoquot Sound
take a deep breath and blow the bridge down

upwards of thousands have stood in the way
but police just come and take them each day
and the government too has its own saws
they're changing the charges by changing the laws

what of the spirits that live in the trees
what of the life, the quiet, the breeze
what of our planet when it's stripped to the ground
farewell, farewell to Clayoquot Sound

what of our planet when it's stripped to the ground
farewell, farewell to Clayoquot Sound

Another Dreamless Sleep

if you're looking for an answer
do not turn your glance my way
if you're looking for some meaning
I've got nothing left to say
if you're looking for some mercy
come on back some other day
I am hanging on the edges of my mind
and another dreamless sleep

there's a black cat in the alley
and she's calling me to come
full moon coming up
and she's calling me to run
if I cannot let them go now
I will surely come undone
'cause I cannot keep the fragments held as one
in another dreamless sleep

in the absence of salvation
we have turned our face to fate
in the absence of decision
we let goodness fall away
while we think we're getting stronger
we grow weaker everyday
'cause we do not see the secret of the soul
it's in another dreamless sleep

Dance, Little Brother

saw my brother just the other day
he was pale and weak, he was fading away
and though we sat and shot the shit we had nothing to say
what can you say?

what can you say in times like this
when a backward glance or a stolen kiss
can make you prince or pauper
make you hit or miss

if you only knew him when he used to dance
with his slicked back hair and his poured on pants
he could really strut his stuff
and turn a head or two

dance little brother like you used to do
dance little brother like you

when he was born he was the chosen one
the golden child, the fair-haired son
he was the hopes and dreams of a future come at last
grew up too fast

as his eyes dim, so do ours
years into days, days into hours
the hopes and dreams of a future flying past

we've got micro-discs and test tube wombs
we've got nuclear bombs and men on the moon
but do we have a hope in hell of bringing that boy home

dance little brother like you used to do
dance little brother like you

Warrior

I was a shy and lonely girl
with the heavens in my eyes
and as I walked along the lane
I heard the echoes of her cries

I cannot fight
I cannot a warrior be
it's not my nature nor my teaching
it is the womanhood in me

I was a lost and angry youth
there were no tears in my eyes
I saw no justice in my world
only the echoes of her cries

I cannot fight
I cannot a warrior be
it's not my nature nor my teaching
it is the womanhood in me

I am an older woman now
and I will heed my own cries
and I will a fierce warrior be
'til not another woman dies

I can and will fight
I can and will a warrior be
it is my nature and my duty
it is the womanhood in me

I can and will fight
I can and will a warrior be
it is my nature and my duty
it is the sisterhood in me

If It Ain't Here

you can write me a letter, you can call me on the phone
but the fact of the matter is, I'm still all alone
you can spin me a story, you can tell me how you feel
but if it ain't here, baby, it ain't real

you can get down on your knees darling
at the end of the day
but if you're too tired for me, just go on your way
chocolates and flowers won't cut the deal
'cause if it ain't here, baby, it ain't real

if it ain't here, I'll have a sad face
if it ain't here, I'll find it some other place
if it ain't here, you've had your last free meal
'cause if it ain't here, baby, it ain't real

I'm the kind of woman, got lots of needs
but you can't console me with your baubles and your beads
if you're a real lover better show me how you feel
'cause if I can't see it then it just ain't real

if it ain't here, I won't go to waste
if it ain't here, I'll find it some other place
if it ain't here, you've had your last free meal
'cause if it ain't here, baby, it ain't real

The Edge of Grace

at last I feel the weather turning
and the sun has warmed my skin
my heart's no longer burning
from the pain of what has been
I see that long road getting shorter
think I see my home again
and I long to walk beside you
and feel the long lost love of living

it's a longer road from anger
to forgiveness than I'd thought
thought I let mine go a thousand times
I never gave it up
and it held me and it fed me
and I thought it was my lifeline
and I did not think that I could stand alone

but now I feel the weather turning
and the sun has warmed my skin
my heart's no longer burning from the pain of what has been
I see that long road getting shorter
think I see my home again
and I long to walk beside you
and feel the long lost love

been living on the edge of life
living through those lonely nights
living without hope of light
giving up my dreams

there's a path to take you anywhere
your heart will let you go
it can lead you to the edge of grace
and hold you till you know
that there's always more than what you're seeing
look through the dark to what will free you
feel that long lost love

at last I feel the weather turning
and the sun has warmed my skin
my heart's no longer burning
from the pain of what has been
I see that long road getting shorter
think I see my home again
and I long to walk beside you
and feel the long lost love
